Paul - Bessom hill - 15/5/6 |
hi, the comment above rings true, i too was unaware that this locality existed and yeilded, it is not in any books that i have on the manchester/ lancashire area, but what a good site. after searching for a while it seemed that all i would come away with would be a few (nice)calimities and a few fragile goniatite imprints in the shale, when i stumbled upon two brick sized lumps of rather hard rock full of goniatites and the long belemnite type fossil. what i wanted to know is that if any guides have been published, what are these species do these fossils belong to and where and how common is the fish material.
thanks |

Besom Hill Quarry 2005 |
Hi, Just to say thanks for the report on Besom Hill quarry in Oldham, I live nearby and thought there were no fossils in it. But after reading your write up, me and my son had another go at it. We found the fossil band this time, about 2 feet high, right on top of a layer of coal, high up the face. It is packed with fossils, mainly small shells and what look like ammonites, and small pointy things which looked like belemnites. We found hard boulders high up in these shales too, that were packed wih fossils. We have 4 quarries in Oldham now that yield up stuff from the carboniferous time, when Oldham was a tropical swamp! Calamites and shells seem to be the commonest stuff, although I know someone who found a frog once. Thanks again, Tim and young Mark. Oldham. |
